A varmint rifle is built to hit small pest animals such as prairie dogs, groundhogs and ground squirrels at distance, and it often doubles as a coyote rifle. The recipe: a fast, flat-shooting, light-recoiling cartridge (.223 Remington, .22-250, .204 Ruger, .243 Winchester, or .17 HMR up close), a medium or heavy barrel that holds accuracy as it heats, a clean trigger and a magnified scope with parallax adjustment.
What counts as a varmint
"Varmint" is an informal word for animals treated as pests or nuisances: prairie dogs, groundhogs (woodchucks), ground squirrels and rockchucks are the classic list, and coyotes are often lumped in, although many hunters call them predators instead. The legal status of these animals varies a great deal. In some states certain species have no closed season; in others they require a license or have seasons and methods rules. Always check the current regulations for the state and species, and get landowner permission.
Anatomy of a varmint rifle
The cartridge
Varmint cartridges are fast and flat-shooting, with light bullets and mild recoil. Flat trajectory means small errors in range estimation matter less. Light recoil means you can watch your own hits through the scope, which is half the point on a prairie dog town.
The barrel
Varmint shooting can mean many shots in a short time, and barrels heat up. A thin barrel's point of impact can wander as it heats, so varmint rifles usually use medium or heavy ("bull") barrel contours that stay stable longer. Some use fluting to shed a little weight and add surface area.
The trigger
Small targets at distance demand a clean, crisp trigger. Most modern factory triggers are adjustable within a safe range; a good trigger matters more here than on a woods rifle.
The stock
A flat, wide forend rides steadily on a bag or rest, and a stud or rail takes a bipod. Varmint shooting is usually done prone or from a bench, so the stock is designed for support, not for carrying.
The optic
Higher magnification than a deer scope, with adjustable parallax (side focus) so the reticle stays sharp and aligned at different distances. Our rifle optics guide explains the features.
Varmint cartridges compared
| Cartridge | Type | Best for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| .17 HMR | Rimfire | Small pests at modest range | Tiny bullet; wind-sensitive |
| .22 WMR | Rimfire | Close-range pests and small game | More punch than .22 LR, far less than centerfire |
| .204 Ruger | Centerfire | Very flat shooting with minimal recoil | Easy to spot your own hits |
| .223 Rem / 5.56 | Centerfire | The all-rounder; bolt guns and ARs | Inexpensive, widely available ammunition |
| .22-250 Rem | Centerfire | Faster and flatter than .223 | Heats barrels faster |
| 6mm ARC | Centerfire | Longer-range varmints from an AR-size action | Newer; fewer factory loads than .223 |
| .243 Win | Centerfire | Varmints and deer where legal | More recoil than the .22 centerfires |

Varmint vs. predator vs. precision rifle
| Varmint rifle | Predator rifle | Precision rifle | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical target | Small pests at distance | Coyotes and foxes | Paper and steel |
| Weight | Medium to heavy | Light to medium; carried | Heavy on purpose |
| Shooting position | Bench, bipod, prone | Sticks, kneeling, sitting | Prone, barricades, bags |
| Barrel | Medium to heavy contour | Light to medium | Heavy |
| Magnification | High | Low to medium, often illuminated | Medium to high with precise turrets |
The line between them blurs, which is why this site groups them in one precision and varmint rifle category. Where hunting and precision rifles split, see hunting vs. precision rifle.
Bolt action or AR for varmints?
A bolt action usually delivers more accuracy for the money and lets barrels cool between deliberate shots. An AR makes follow-up shots and high-volume days easy, and 5.56 ammunition is plentiful. On a big prairie dog town, many shooters bring two rifles and rotate them so neither barrel overheats. If you already own an AR, hunting with an AR-15 covers setup and legal checks; for the bolt side, see what is a bolt-action rifle.

Varmint country is often flat and hard, which is exactly where ricochets happen. Know what is beyond every target, avoid shooting at rocks or hardpan, keep livestock, buildings and roads well out of the line of fire, and use a proper backstop. Ask the landowner where it is safe to shoot, and leave gates the way you found them. The fastest way to lose access is a careless shot.
What makes a rifle accurate enough
No single rifle is "the most accurate varmint rifle." Accuracy comes from a combination of barrel quality, bedding, trigger, ammunition, scope and the shooter. The practical approach: buy a rifle with a good barrel and trigger, mount quality glass properly, then test several loads from a solid rest and settle on the one your rifle likes.
FAQ
What is a varmint rifle?
A rifle designed to hit small pest animals at distance: a fast, flat-shooting small-bore cartridge, a stiff barrel, a clean trigger and a high-magnification scope.
What makes a rifle a varmint rifle?
Mostly the cartridge and the setup. Medium or heavy barrels, a flat forend for rests, a crisp trigger and an optic with adjustable parallax separate a varmint rifle from a general hunting rifle.
What is the most accurate varmint rifle?
There is no single answer. Accuracy comes from the barrel, bedding, trigger, ammunition, optic and shooter together. Test several loads in any good rifle and use the one it shoots best.
What is the best caliber for varmint hunting?
.223 Remington is the most versatile and economical. .22-250 and .204 Ruger shoot flatter; .17 HMR and .22 WMR suit close-range work; .243 Winchester covers varmints and deer where legal.
Is a .22 LR a varmint rifle?
For ground squirrels and similar small pests at short range, it can be. For groundhogs or longer shots, a .17 HMR, .22 WMR or centerfire is a better tool.
What is the difference between a varmint rifle and a predator rifle?
A varmint rifle is usually heavier and shot from a rest at small targets. A predator rifle is lighter and built to be carried and shot from sticks or sitting, often at coyotes.
